Sedation dentistry helps patients who feel anxious, have sensitive gag reflexes, or need longer procedures complete their dental care comfortably. Cy Becker Dental offers two well-established options — inhaled nitrous oxide and oral sedation — chosen based on the procedure, your medical history, and your comfort level.

Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is the most commonly used dental sedative for both adults and children. You breathe a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a small nosepiece. Within minutes you feel calm, lightly euphoric, and relaxed. Nitrous is easy to titrate during the visit and clears from your system within 5–10 minutes after the mask is removed, so you can drive yourself home and return to normal activities.

Oral sedation uses a prescribed pill (typically a benzodiazepine) taken before your appointment. It produces a deeper level of relaxation than nitrous and is well suited to patients with significant dental anxiety or longer treatments such as multiple fillings, extractions, or implant placement. You remain awake and able to respond, but you may not remember much of the visit. An adult escort to and from the appointment is required.

Both options are safe when delivered by a trained team in a controlled setting. We review your medical history, current medications, and any prior anaesthesia experiences before selecting a sedation plan. During treatment we continuously monitor your breathing, oxygen saturation, and comfort.

For children, we use age-appropriate nitrous oxide protocols delivered through a small flavoured nosepiece. Many anxious children who have struggled at the dentist do remarkably well with nitrous, allowing us to complete fillings, sealants, or extractions in a single calm visit.
